George Orwell grew up a devout and dedicated socialist in the British colonies of India and even when he eventually studied and lived in England. He was loyal to the beliefs and followings of socialism s fathers, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, the authors of The Communist Manifesto and Das Kapital. However, when Orwell saw the ideals of Socialism turned into vicious Communism, taking advantage of and abusing the lower classes that it was intended to help, he could not turn a blind eye to the cruelties and hypocrisies of the totalitarian Communism under the dictatorial reign of Joseph Stalin. Therefore, Orwell wrote two greatest anti-Communist novels that solidified his place as an advocate of freedom and a committed opponent of Communist†¦show more content†¦The pigs, whom had hastily recognized themselves as the intelligent leaders of their comrades, formulated the fundamentals of success on Animal Farm with a philosophy called Animalism. Animalism, unbeknownst to them, wa s based upon the principles of Socialism, where each and every animal or comrade was treated equally and fairly in a classless and casteless society. Furthermore, with these moral standards put in place, the pigs drafted the Seven Commandments so that the comrades shall never forget and stray from their newfound benevolence and philanthropy and wrote them on the barn wall for all to see. The Commandments included: 1. Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy. 2. Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend. 3. No animal shall wear clothes. 4. No animal shall sleep in a bed. 5. No animal shall drink alcohol. 6. No animal shall kill any other animal. 7. All animals are equal. After reading â€Å"Country of the One Eye God† by Olive Senior, I couldn’t help but think that the story sounds all too familiar with the world in which we live today where money devours the souls of people with good intentions. This is a short story of a grandmother, Ma Bell, who has raised her grandchildren up from nothing. One grandchild in particular, Jacko, grows to become a rebel. Eloped with bitterness and resentment, Jacko gets what he wants by any means necessary, even if it means crossing those he loves. In this story, Olive senior takes us on a short journey with an uncut reality of a madness that goes on everyday. Olive Senior holds nothing back as he vividly depicts how poverty takes a toll on people which can result in devastation. My first and last impressions of Ma Bell were positive. She is an Ol’ School grandmother who came from nothing but spent her entire life raising children. Her higglering days earned her money; portions of which she saved for herself. Ma Bell’s biggest dream is to have a proper burial when she dies. She dreams of a fine coffin, not the â€Å"plain cedar coffin† that most people are buried in. She feels that she deserves a proper way of leaving this earth since she came in through poverty. To Ma Bell this dream, this vanity, represented a final checkpoint – ironically she looked forward to it. It is the one thing she put money aside for and it was so important to her that she always kept the money on her person. Her clothes had many layers and within these layers she kept her money stash. This dream gave her a reason to live and keep going because she knew once she couldn’t go anymore, she’d go out in style. Her very own flesh and blood, Jacko, takes this dream from Ma Bell. In a spree of murder, rape, robbery, and other illegal activity fuelled by bitterness and resentment, Jacko returns to the house where he was raised. At 19 years old, he is a wanted man. Jacko’s parents left him in Ma Bell’s care as a child so they can â€Å"go foreign† and seek a better life for their family. It was their intentions to come back for him once a better life was established, but unfortunately sometimes the best plans don’t work out for everybody. In this case, the plans did not work out in Jacko’s favor. They left him with his grandmother and false promises of returning for him each year. Nothing is more dangerous than a man with nothing to lose. A feared man on the streets, Jacko headlines the news and returns to Ma Bell for money to escape the country. His ego from all the people he has gotten over overspills into arenas he has no right venturing into. After a meal and some rum, Jacko demands Ma Bell hand over her savings. Ma Bell lives for a proper burial, and the only possible way of that happening is with her savings. In her mind, losing the money gives her no reason to live anymore; so she refuses. Jacko feels his family never gave him a fair share, so he decides he is going to leave with the money one way or the other. He pities Ma Bell’s relationship with God, calling him a â€Å"One Eye God† who only favors to the rich and forgets the poor. Ma Bell’s faith in God disgusts him, and angers him even more in his attempt to retrieve the money. The story ends with Jacko holding a gun pointed at Ma Bell, his very own grandmother. I think most people will think â€Å"no, he wouldn’t shoot his grandmother†. But I think most people watch too much TV. In reality, domestic violence runs rampant among many societies. Life isn’t a block buster movie where the FBI runs in and says â€Å"freeze! † In real life, the unexpected happens everyday, and in too many cases it is over money. A sorry story of a poor grandmother who came from nothing will not make that gun jam. Money has caused mass genocide and murder in poor places like Africa. Money has people of higher power manipulating people’s faith in religion, causing them to strap bombs to their body and detonate. Money has given birth to social status. Unfortunately, there are thousands of people just like Jacko around the world who are bitter about things in life that haven’t quite worked out in their favor, and will do anything to ease their suffering. In my opinion, Jacko isn’t the real bad guy in this story. Neither is Ma Bell or any of her other children. This story, â€Å"Country Of the One Eye God†, is a metaphor for the money infested society we live in where greed conquers all and all the wealth is divided amongst a handful of people. Many teens believed that they were pressured into having sex. But if the community has the strength to pressure teenagers into having sex, then society should be using education to help teach teenagers about how bad sex is before marriage. Teenagers that is engaging into sexual activities before marriage is a major cause of teenage pregnancy. Teenagers often believe that they cannot get pregnant, or being a parent cannot happen to them, but the teenage pregnancy rate is on the rise every year. Being careless is a great factoring in teenage pregnancy, whether it is the use of contraceptives, or choosing their sexual partner. Teenagers use the different methods of birth control wrong. Teenagers do not have the adult mentality to choose a partner they want to be with at their age, which causes them to make the wrong decisions about their partners, which cause them to make wrong decisions and here is an unwanted pregnancy. The majority of unwanted pregnancies occur because teenagers do not really do not see how easy it is to become pregnant, or how they should know how to use birth control methods correctly. A lot of teenagers feel that they love their significant other, and so they began plan for a baby but their focus is not to look at the financial obligations that follow. Sex before marriage can play a great role in a teenager’s emotional factor. Teenagers feel all kinds of, emotional loss after they engage into having sex before marriage. Some teenagers may not feel the emotions of having sex now, but as they get older, life begins to sink in. They are economically dependent, and the teen moms are not able to spend time with their children. Whether the parents know that their child is pregnant this really affects the women emotionally and psychologically, her ability to continue going to school, and her finances are affected. Parents should be able to make sure they get all the love that their teenagers need. If the teenagers parents do not know are not aware, there is a problem that the parents and their teenage daughters bond will be messed up at a time when parental support is most important. Now in some cases, I feel that the teenager might not want to tell her parents that she needs birth control or that she is engaging into sexual activities, for example, if a teen has been abused by their parents maybe if they were to tell their parents they would feel threatened for their safety. In a quick summary, Adam and Eve were forbidden to eat the fruit off of the Tree of Life and Eve was the first to create this sin, but is it really her fault the situation occurred? In Eves Apology in Defense of Women by Aemilia Lanyer, Lanyer produces an excuse as to why women are sinful through Eves character relating her primary sin back to eating from the garden. Eve is the first women on Earth who gave birth to all the children on Earth and is the main role model for women. Lanyer describes Eve as innocent and unknowledgeable. She was made simply good because God made her that way, therefore; through Him she does not know any better (Lanyer, ll. 21). Eve being unknowledgeable wanted to know more and was extremely curious. She was easily deceived or misled by the snake that was Satan in disguise because of her curiosity and ate from the forbidden tree for knowledge sake not out vengeance or direct violation. However, Lanyer points out that Adam, representation of all men, ate the fruit out of pure pleasure and therefore, directly disobeys God out of selfishness (Lanyer, ll. 53). Therefore, through curiosity Eve was pressured into finding out more in the life she was living. Further on in the poem, Lanyer reinforces that Eve was made from Adam as a result, the source of evil comes from and resides in him as well (Lanyer, ll. 65-66). Lanyer is continually trying to show man that women are not the problem in society but that it is man. She sees man as creating the greatest sin, pointing out that man had betrayed Gods son through crucifixion out of pure wickedness and deceit. However, Eve was an innocent mistake and through an individuals weakness not all women should be held accountable for her mistake because lessons can be learned (Lanyer, ll. 73-77, 85-88). Eves Apology in Defense of Women is a way for Lanyer to defend all women through defending Eves mistake by comparing it to the greater malice which man has done over the centuries. It seems as if Lanyer is asking how you can possibly blame Eve when it is mans fault for executing the Savior and is that not alone the worse crime? This poem illustrates the feminist view defending womens rights and fight ing for an overall equality for women in society through Eves story. Eve, as presented through Lanyer, is just a woman that was misled by man and is continually being punished for her mistake. However, through John Miltons perspective Eve is a woman unequal to man and for that she is in her rightful place. John Milton first introduces Adam and Eve through Satans perspective. This perspective is a first impression of the characters and how they are perceived by other beings. Satan first describes that they are lords of all, meaning that they are above all other creatures within this paradise (Milton, b. 4; ll. 290). The description goes further into stating that the two individuals are however, not equal in sex (Milton, b. 4; ll. 296). It relates back to the fact that women come second to men and answer to them, therefore; giving men a higher status than women. Eve is further described as being soft, sweet, and gracefully attractive compared to Adam and only serves God through Adam and by his word (Milton, b. 4; ll. 298-299). Furthermore, Eves complete appearance is described as naturally beautiful with a slender waist, natural golden hair that made her seem untidy yet prom iscuous, she yields to Adam, but seems modest sweet and reluctant (Milton, b. 4; ll. 304-311). Although, she seems to be a wanted and willing woman, Eve is still curious and capable of wondering onto the wrong path with her lack of knowledge. As the story progresses, Eve does not seem to enhance her role in Miltons work but continues a downfall in character. Continuing in book 4 lines 449-491, Eve begins to describe her awakening to Adam. She describes it as waking up under a covering of flowers within the shade and that she wonders amongst the gardens territory. In other words, she is born in darkness by a veil of beauty. It than explains that she is a wonderer which could be a foreshadowing event that there is evil in her and that there is a possibility of her getting on the wrong path falling to deceit. She finds a lake and appearing into it sees her reflection which memorizes her. She makes the comment that she was startled by it at first but then was pleased by it. Upon its return she was delighted, thus showing she was entranced by her own beauty in vain desire. She later admits that God speaks to her telling her that it is her reflection that she sees but he never presents himself to her unlike he does when Adam aw akens. Milton compares Eves turning back to her reflection to the myth of Eurydice explaining that if she were to turn back to her image she would be drowned in despair and anguish. Eve is easily compelled by her beauty and seen as being vain however; Satan does not succeed when trying to persuade her this way (Milton, b. 9; ll. 216). However, later she was easily swayed by Satan because he was able to make her feel equal to Adam and connecting her directly to God (Milton, b. 9; ll. 538-548). She is filled with narcissistic pleasure through herself not needing Adam anymore; without the connection to Adam she feels free to do whatever, including eat from the tree. In fear of death and Adam finding someone else like her, Eve tells Adam about eating from the garden. Adam than eats the fruit as well so Eve does not have to go down alone in consequence (Milton, b. 9; ll. 830-833). John Milton perceives Eve to being superficial and easily swayed. He does not place any good implications on her character making her out to be one of the villains but main characters of the story. Eve through Milton acts as a representation of women during his time period. While both Lanyer and Milton use Eve as a main character who is seen as unknowledgeable, curious, and swindled, they use her to tell two completely different stories with completely different meanings. Lanyer is compelled to use Eve as a reason for why women are treated unequally and how man is the problem creating the most malevolence. However, Milton is showing that women are unequal for multiple good reasons, one dealing with vanity consuming them and being unable to follow order. Each provides a viewpoint of that time period on how women were perceived and how sex roles played a huge part in society. Renaissance literature is able to take religious, political, and social standards and twist them in a way that the reader is able to gather an understanding of what life was like during that century. Aemilia Lanyer and John Milton took to describing their societies through the character of Eve in two different ways which were extremely compelling.
